It’s no doubt that recent years have changed all of our driving habits. Many of us find ourselves at home more and traveling less. While your car may be parked for longer, its needs haven’t magically disappeared; new ones have replaced them. Here at Hagerstown Honda, we know that stagnant cars need routine maintenance and service as well, and since you don’t have as much mileage to measure by, the timing can change. How you tell when to replace or check something often changes as well, and we’re here to help with that.
While your owner’s manual may recommend maintenance by the mile, that doesn’t mean that only mileage can affect your car. Over time, the complex organic compounds in your oil, brake fluid, and other fluids can break down or become inert. These compounds are vital to maintaining the viscosity and thermal protection inherent to these fluids. It’s important to check your oil and other fluids frequently, and, on top of that, generally, your oil and other fluids should be changed at least once a year.
Counter-intuitive as it may seem, sometimes the best thing you can do for your car is to run the engine periodically. When you run our engine for about 20 minutes, many things happen. First, your alternator gives your battery back the charge that may have leaked out while the car was off. Second, your systems start pumping your fluids across the engine, transmission, and more, and these fluids maintain the natural corrosion protection that they’re meant to provide. We recommend running your engine for 20 minutes or even taking a drive every once a week to make sure that everything continues to run as it should.
We here at Hagerstown Honda have factory-trained and certified technicians who will know exactly how to keep your car in the best shape possible.
