What's New for the 2017 Honda Pilot?

With just two years into its third production cycle, the Honda Pilot is understandably unchanged going into its 2017 model year. The roominess, standard V6 engine, and robust safety features are still in place. And the number of trims is intact at five; they are the LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and Elite. The engine that powers the 2017 Honda Pilot is a 3.5-liter V6 that provides 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. The lower-level LX and EX and mid-tiered EX-L have their engines fitted with a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the upper-level Touring and Elite get a 9-speed automatic gearbox. Although designed as a front-engine front-wheel-drive vehicle on the base level, you have the option of switching the drivetrain with an all-wheel drive system, which is standard on the Elite trim. Designed as a midsize crossover vehicle, the 2017 Pilot provides more than 150 cubic feet of passenger space, with three rows of seats. However, if you go with the Elite, the second row consists of two captain’s seats to keep maximum capacity at seven occupants, while the other trims have a second-row bench-style seat for maximum occupancy at eight. Standard accommodations include Bluetooth connectivity, remote keyless entry, a multi-angle rearview camera, and seven-speaker audio with a 5-inch color audio-display screen. On the EX and higher, the Pilot gets upgrades and additions such as remote engine start, an 8-inch screen, 10-way power adjustment and lumbar support on the driver’s seat, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone-based control, HondaLink for infotainment integration, and a trial SiriusXM satellite radio subscription.

The EX-L further upgrades the Pilot with 4-way power adjustment on the front passenger’s seat, leather trim, and front-seat heating capability. The Touring and Elite get a voice-activated navigation system, 10-speaker audio, and rear DVD entertainment system that includes a Blu-Ray disc player. The Elite is alone with HD Radio and front-seat ventilation capability. For prevention of serious injury or death in the event of a crash, the 2017 Pilot is loaded with front impact airbags, which face the front occupants; dual side impact airbags, which are installed on the front seats; and three-row side curtains for head protection. Other standard safety features include anti-lock braking, vehicle stability assist with traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, and daytime running lights (DRLs). You would have to upgrade to the Touring or Elite trim to get advanced safety features like collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning. Moreover, the halogen DRLs are replaced by longer-lasting and brighter LEDs when you go with the EX trim or higher.
