 What's New for the 2017 Honda CR-V?

Ever since the first CR-V debuted in the 1990’s, Honda has worked hard to keep its flagship compact crossover new, exciting and relevant. While most other manufacturers do a full redesign of their SUVs every six years or so, Honda has been redesigning the CR-V roughly every four years. The 2017 model is the most recent of those, marking the start of the fifth generation of the vehicle. It features upgrades in nearly every category, bringing new and innovative designs to the crossover’s body, interior, engine and even safety technology. The CR-V has already been recognized as one of the top compact crossover SUVs by the likes of U.S. News and World Report and Kelley Blue Book, and the new updated redesign should help it keep its spot at the top of the heavily competitive compact SUV segment.

Without seeing the 2017 Honda CR-V side by side with its 2016 counterpart, it can initially be difficult to tell what has changed from the outside of the vehicle. The same shape and design cues that have given the CR-V instant brand recognition are still there in the 2017 model. However, a closer look reveals some modern touches to the sheet metal, such as a more aggressive front fascia and larger wheel arches that extrude slightly from the body. Practically, the 2017 CR-V sits taller than its predecessor, gaining about an inch and a half of ground clearance, and is slightly longer and wider as well. That means better handling over terrain or in poor weather conditions, as well as a slightly bigger cabin. Inside, that is reflected in two more inches of legroom and several more cubic feet of storage space. And while your rear passengers will definitely appreciate the growth in the rear leg room, they will also enjoy the improvements Honda has made to the interior materials. The 2017 CR-V has replaced many of the hard plastics of the previous model with new soft-touch materials and has given the cabin a more upscale ambiance across the whole model range. This is particularly noticeable on the high-end Touring model, which now features luxury-grade wood trim accents. The 2017 CR-V also offers some performance upgrades over the previous model, thanks to a new engine. Base models still use the 2.4-liter that was the sole engine choice last year, while all other 2017 CR-Vs are equipped with the all-new 1.5-liter four-cylinder. It raises the power output slightly, with 6 more peak horsepower than the 2.4-liter, but it has a steeper power curve, which means better acceleration. The new engine is also more efficient, adding about two miles per gallon to the CR-V’s city, highway and combined economy ratings. The 2017 Honda CR-V also makes the active safety suite a standard feature on all but the base model, which includes automatic emergency braking and dynamic cruise control alongside blind spot monitoring and lane departure warnings.
